BEHIND THE SCENE
As a kid, I grew up with a huge collection of teddy bears.
I was raised in Switzerland, at a time when there were no bears to be found, anywhere. I never questioned why I loved the bears so much.
Over the past decade, I’ve focused my work on the three species of North American bears. Studying the origins of the human relationship with these animals led me to understand the deep bonds between the two species and the problems that come with it.
It’s a story of admiration, fear, worship, and hunting, a relationship forged in early human times and that will probably always be with us.
During spring, the bears graze like livestock at pasture. They’re particularly fond of the new, fresh sedges.
Mother bears, freshly emerged from their winter dens, teach their newborn cubs about life in the great outdoors. Observing cubs playing among the tall, fresh grass is a pure delight, even if photographically it can be very challenging and frustrating. The tall grass being always in your way! I was very fortunate when this cub got lost in the tall grass and stretched up as high as he could reach on his hind legs, looking for his mother.
