BEHIND THE SCENE

Polar bears have evolved to thrive in frigid climates. They are equipped with two layers of fur — one containing hollow hair — as well as black skin and a substantial layer of fat, all of which provide effective insulation against the cold.

To minimize heat loss, polar bears possess small ears and tails. Their large paws enable them to traverse thin ice with ease.

Their black footpads are adorned with papillae, which, in conjunction with their lengthy claws, create a crampon-like grip on the ice, facilitating confident movement.

Polar bears have long necks, which serve them well for both swimming and capturing seals through openings in the ice.

I photographed this polar bear during a windstorm in Svalbard.
